Who is behind Web Learning?
Derek Moore (that's me), runs Web Learning. I have worked with diverse range of people and platforms within a variety of environments. I have designed and developed e-learning tools for clients in the secondary and tertiary sector and also launched web sites for clients (mostly) in the education and development sector. Recent highlights include
- Restructuring and teaching the PGCE Ed Tech course using Social Media (UKZN)
- Authoring materials for Open Education Resources Africa, · Researching, designing and supporting an electronic formative assessment tool for the Faculty of Law (UKZN)
- Consulting and collaborating locally and nationally with academics from UKZN, Rhodes and Stellenbosch on the Kenton Education Association websites
I’ve also created, initiated and run content management systems for the School of Psychology, School of Education and Development, CEAD, INR, Farmer Support Group, St Nicholas School, GHS and many others.
My experience with ICT goes beyond tools, platforms and websites. I’ve explored notions of technology stewardship and communities of practice with psychology and education students, addressed high and primary school teachers at national conferences, advised and assisted fieldworkers from SCISLM, CINDI and FSG as they set out to use the web to connect to other people. Recently I’ve started exploring mLearning, immersed myself in social media and teacher development (you can find me on Twitter @weblearning) and am being inducted into the world of open teaching and open access. My commitment to open learning and quality education goes beyond selecting and configuring suitable tools/websites. In my practice, I set out to impart a passion for life long learning and attempt to model a “Can Do” attitude.
Who is Web Learning's 'target market'?
I usuallly work with people within the educational, developmental and training sectors that want to understand and respond to the challenges of using the web. Sometime small businesses people will ask me to assist them with their web presence and I'll gladly assist.
How are we different?
Instead of focussing my attention soley on the web site or application, I like to first ask two questions:
- How will this web resource assist you accomplish your mission
- 'What do online users want and need?'.
Together, I then design, develop and deploy resources to meet these identified needs and offer users support as they manage and master their new resources.
What do we offer?
We can build your web site
I like to create / deploy systems that put people in charge of their web sites. If you ask me to design a site, I try to keep things simple and in line with international web standards. My main focus is not technical wizardry, although I do admit to getting vibed by pretty designs and our nifty bells and whistles. What really motivates me is the idea of a web presence that is driven by the people who own and use them; when the web becomes an integral part of the work of the organisation
We can help manage your web site
The formula for a keeping a great website good is straightforward. Let your site tell a story. Good sites are built by peoplethat want to share their passion and experiences with others. It's not the design or technology that makes a web site great. It's people's participation. A good web site amplifies and directs an interesting and compelling voice and I can assist you and your organisation to keep your voice being heard.
We can teach you to make better use of the web
It might be a cliche, but I really believe that 'WE' are the web. What's made the web explode is the people who have used the medium to communicate. The Web has given ordinary people an inexpensive but global platform to say something. We can build your website and we can look after your digital asset, but ultimately we'd like to help you participate in the online conversations, and we think that we can help you to project your voice.
What comes with the Web Learning package?
I wear many hats and am found all over the web. But my specialty is teaching, learning and technology. Essentially I design, implement and support appropriate on-line systems for people who want to say something on the web. Whether you are a school, a small businesses, a NGOs, a higher education institutions or an individual, if you want to inform or educate, I'm here to instruct and coach you and your organisation put yourself on line.
